THE INCREASE REQUIRES THE DECREASE…


John 3:30 – He must increase, but I must decrease.” ESV

In Acts Chapter 3, the first sixteen verses we find the account of Peter and John going to the Temple at the ninth hour.  A man, they possibly had seen numerous times was sitting there begging.  The man was lame and had been lame for a long time.  Peter was moved with compassion and instructed the lame man to look upon them.  He then made the incredible declaration, “I have no silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you.  In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk!” 

The result of that miracle was the people wanted to make Peter and John gods and worship them.  Peter resisted and began his powerful message to the captive audience regarding Jesus, his life, death, burial, and resurrection.  Peter was empty of self and filled with the presence and power of Jesus!  He and John had just demonstrated the validity of Jesus’ commission in Matthew 28.

The text in John 3 is incredibly powerful.  John said that in order for Jesus to be manifest in His fullness and in the manner needful, “I must decrease.”  For Jesus to receive the proper recognition and be elevated to His place of Lordship, “I must decrease.”  In order for the Kingdom to come and the will of God to be done, “I must decrease.”  Unfortunately, too often, rather than decreasing we elevate ourselves, our desires, and our preferences.

I ask that you consider this truth – John had a successful ministry with a large following.  He was highly regarded by everyone, even kings respected and possibly feared him.  Everywhere he goes, the crowds gather, and people are in awe of his ministry and his message.  This strange man is a prophet in the eyes of the people.  Even those who despised him acknowledged his impact.

In today’s world, most ministers would be doing everything they could to increase their ministry, their following, their offerings, etc.  They would be scheduling more and larger crusades.  They would hire a marketing team and be seeking book deals and developing tele-blogs to increase their popularity and seeming impact.  The natural world would be crying – “More, John.  More, larger, bigger!”  John said, “I must decrease!”

Remember what Jesus said in John 12:32?  He said, “And I when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.”  That should be our focus, lifting up Jesus not building our own kingdom, advancing our ministry, enlarging our visibility.  That might be well for business but not for Kingdom ministry.  His increase requires our decrease!

A Natural Law teaches us that for any vessel to be filled with one thing it must be emptied of another.  For a room to be filled with light it must be emptied of darkness.  For a vessel to be filled with water it must be emptied of air.  An increase produces a decrease.  For a room to be filled with hot it must be emptied of cold.  It is a Natural Law!

The increase of Jesus begins with a decrease.  Flesh cannot glory in His presence.  John understood with whom the Hope of Life rested.  He knew that he (John) was only a voice, a messenger, not the message.  He was the introduction, the prelude.  He was temporary, the forerunner, not the star or the message. 

He (Jesus) must increase and for Him to increase I must decrease.  He is the one depended upon for Salvation.  He is the All-Powerful One.  He alone has the power to save.  I on the other hand am the one in need.  I am weak and frail.  I need salvation.  I am a vessel and a voice – He is the Message! 

Jesus is the Hope of Humanity!  He is the solution to every problem.  He is the remedy.  But, for Him to become who He is, we must decrease and lift Him up, and then He draws people to Him.  I can save no one!  I can only point to the one who saves to the uttermost!  Therefore, I must decrease!

I want to take this a step or two further and will do that in the next devotional.  Until then, go with God and He will go with you.

DO NOT LOVE… WHAT???


1 John 2:15-17 – “Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world. 17 The world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever.” NASB

I have heard more explanations of this than I care to remember and virtually all of them fell short of bringing me peace and confidence that I had discovered the depth of the truth in this passage.  It is obvious, to me, that Jesus, through John, would not have issued this prohibition without reason.  Here we find the command not to love something, but what?  We are told to not love the World or the things of the world but what is it that we are not to love?

In my study I have found that the word world is used in the Bible in three different ways and speaks to three different things:

  • World as in the ‘physical universe’ or God’s material creation.
  • World as it refers to and identifies PEOPLE or the ‘world of mankind.’
  • World as it refers to the dwellers on the earth who, are ‘by nature without God, acting and living in a way that only has reference to ‘this life.’

If we interpret this passage using the physical universe as the meaning, then we would have to ask does not God love His own creation.  Therefore, would it be wrong for us to love, respect, and appreciate what He has made?  In the second using people as the meaning, we know that GOD loves all mankind so how could we be prohibited from loving them too?  That only leaves us one possibility and that is the world of man outside of God and apart from God.  Clearly, he is telling us not to love the Life of Sin.  The pleasures of sin are of short duration.  We are to guard our hearts and seek Him with our entire being.

Then we notice that he said we are not to love the things of the world and if you pursue the reading, you will see that he beings to talk about the sins of mankind here listing some as the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life. 

In each case, it is, to me, clear that the prohibition is not referring to people, the planet, or things that we might possess and/or use of this world’s material creation but the Life Outside God!  The World here is referencing a life, mentality, and condition that clearly is a description of a life that ignores God, His Word, and His love.  It focuses on self and is in rebellion against God, His Word, and His Love. 

Therefore, we are not to Love the World meaning the World as represented by philosophy, nature, and character that is apart from and alienated from God.  We are to not love the condition that affords licentiousness, lasciviousness, and lawlessness.  We are to Love GOD first and foremost.  We are to reject the pull of the pleasures of sin and the tug of the devil to be a god unto ourselves.

So, as you go through this day go IN GOD’S LOVE and share that love with everyone you meet!  Blessings abundantly!

WHAT DO WE CONCLUDE FROM DELAY?


Hebrews 11:1-6 – “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. 2 For by it the men of old gained approval. 3 By faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things which are visible. 4 By faith Abel offered to God a better sacrifice than Cain, through which he obtained the testimony that he was righteous, God testifying about his gifts, and through faith, though he is dead, he still speaks. 5 By faith Enoch was taken up so that he would not see death; AND HE WAS NOT FOUND BECAUSE GOD TOOK HIM UP; for he obtained the witness that before his being taken up he was pleasing to God. 6 And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.” NASB

A few years ago, I was in need of a miracle and the timeframe the situation seemed to demand had passed and the answer had not come.  Did that mean that God denied my request?  Possibly.  Did it mean that I was praying outside the will of God? Possibly.   Did it mean either of those or could I conclude that it was not meant to be?  Possibly.

You could conclude those things, or you could conclude that God, the Creator who is not limited by our clock or calendar, has a different timeframe and plan in mind.  I choose the latter because I fully believed that my prayers were within the guidelines of the Word of God.  I was praying and walking in obedience to that Word, and therefore was within the scope of The Will of God. 

We have the assurance that God is our provider, protector, and source, have hoped for the things we have asked, and are convinced that He has heard our prayers.  When we do not see the fulfillment in our timeframe giving up is not the best option.  I am reminded of the record of the patriarchs of old, who kept looking for and standing in Faith knowing He is our Reward!   The Bible said, “They all died in faith not having received the promises.”  In my case, the Answer Came!

What should we conclude when the miracle does not come at the time, we asked for it?  Possibly nothing other than it is in God’s hands and we should remain faithful and resolute in our commitment to Him, obedience to Him, and confidence in Him.  Of course, I always go back to the Father and the Book and seek to know if I am missing the mark in my prayers.

If the Holy Spirit reveals that, as James said, we have asked amiss and for wrong purposes then it is time to head to the altar of repentance and cry out for God’s mercy and allow the Holy Spirit to correct our thinking.  I do not live in a ‘Que Sera, Sera’ whatever will be type world.  That is the way the world operates, but God’s ways are higher than our ways and His thoughts than our thoughts. 

I believe there is purpose and power in prayer and that prayer changes people and as a result, things.  If prayer has no purpose, why did Jesus spend so much time encouraging it?  If prayer does not produce results, why did He tell us to pray with persistence? 

Our problem is that we try to force God into our microwave world mentality and coerce Him to follow our calendars, clocks, and schedules. He Will Not be squeezed into our timeline of demand!  He is God and He will do things His way, in His time, and under His conditions and it is always for our best good.

You cannot bribe Him, coerce Him, force Him, manipulate Him, or cajole Him into doing something.  He is the Shepherd we are the sheep.   He is the Teacher we are the students.  He is the Infinite One we are the finite ones.  So instead of fretting about your timelines and schedules seek His face and if there is a delay it may be nothing more than God following His own timetable rather than denial.

KNOWING THE TIME OF OUR VISITATION – – Part 3…


Luke 19:37-48 – “As he was drawing near—already on the way down the Mount of Olives—the whole multitude of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen, 38 saying, “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” 39 And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.” 40 He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.” 41 And when he drew near and saw the city, he wept over it, 42 saying, “Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. 43 For the days will come upon you, when your enemies will set up a barricade around you and surround you and hem you in on every side 44 and tear you down to the ground, you, and your children within you. And they will not leave one stone upon another in you, because you did not know the time of your visitation.” 45 And he entered the temple and began to drive out those who sold, 46 saying to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a den of robbers.” 47 And he was teaching daily in the temple. The chief priests and the scribes and the principal men of the people were seeking to destroy him, 48 but they did not find anything they could do, for all the people were hanging on his words.”  ESV

Back to our question as to why these people or any people would miss the time of their visitation.

Number Three – Placing Improper Worth on God’s House, Word, and Work. 

The visual of Jesus casting out the money changers is evidence of this truth.  They had perverted the purpose and focus of God’s house.  Jesus said in (v. 46) – “My house shall be a house of prayer.”  They had made it a place of merchandise not a place of worship!

God’s House is a place of Prayer!  God’s House is a place of Worship!  God’s House is a place of Learning!  God’s House is a place of Salvation!  God’s House is a place of Discipleship!  To corrupt, the purpose of God’s House is to blaspheme the Name of God!

Irreverence for God’s House and God’s Word distracts and blinds one to the visitation of God.  It mutes the message of the Gospel with the mundane and noise of self-centeredness.

Why did those people manifest this gross spiritual ignorance?  Why did they fail to grasp the things of which Jesus spoke?  Why did they fail to recognize the time of their visitation?  Why?  They were filled with religious prejudice.  They were too preoccupied with themselves. They placed improper worth and reverence on God, God’s House, God’s Work, and God’s Word. 

The question for us is are we willing to acknowledge any failure on our part and come to Him for cleansing?  Are we willing to make ourselves available to Him and His purposes and become involved in the Kingdom?

Sadly, too many fail to realize their time of visitation and allow their heart to become so filled with other cares they crowd out all thought of God and His purpose.  They allow their hearts to become hard toward the things of God.  They place a higher value on themselves than on God and others. 

The scripture says, “Today is the day of salvation.”  I urge you to realize that He is here right now on this earth extending His Grace, Peace, Power, Promise, and Mercy to whosoever will hear and heed His call.  This is our time of visitation.  Will we recognize it?

KNOWING THE TIME OF OUR VISITATION – – Part 2

I have often wondered, why would people fail to recognize the time of their visitation?   Why did these people fail to recognize the time of their visitation?

Number Two – Preoccupation.

They were preoccupied with self-indulgence to recognize the time of their visitation and discern the times in which they were living.  I am reminded of the response of the Children of Israel in the wilderness in Number 11:5. They reminisced about the fish and vegetables they enjoyed in bondage.  They complained that they were having to endure any hardship in being delivered.  They wanted to satisfy their fleshly desires right then and sadly, so do we.

In Proverbs 16:26 we are reminded, “He that labors does so for himself for his mouth craves it of him.”  Also, in Proverbs 27:20 we read, “Man’s eyes are never satisfied.”  Our carnal cravings are always for more.  Paul addressed that in 2 Timothy 3:4 reminding Timothy that sinful people love pleasure more than God.  Too many are seeking physical and emotional gratification rather than spiritual freedom.

Proverbs 21:17 warns, “He that loves pleasure will be a poor man.”

They were preoccupied with the natural pursuit of life.  Jesus warned that if we focus on this life and saving ourselves in this world, we will lose our eternal reward.  If we place Him first, we will have a life here and hereafter.  (Matthew 16:15).

Isaiah warned of the greed for real estate or possessions in (Isaiah 5:8), and Jesus warned of the craving for possessions in (Luke 12:15).  The Bible is filled with warnings of the dangers and control of envy, jealousy, and pride. 

Paul instructed Timothy in 2 Timothy 2:14 that no person going to war allows himself to become preoccupied with the affairs of this life.  His focus is on the war before him.  He recognizes that he must win the war to pursue any semblance of life.  The word ‘entangled’ means to inweave, entangle, involve, or make the focus that object.

They were preoccupied with the problems and difficulties of life.  Their domestic needs and desires outweighed their desire for eternal peace.  Matthew 6:33 gives us the prescription – “Seek first…”  Seek what?  God and His Kingdom above all else and the result is we get both what we need in this life and eternal life.

I want to address this one more step but will pause and encourage you to focus on God not what is before you in life.

It is of significance to define what the word translated ‘visitation.’ In Strong’s Concordance, it is defined as ‘inspection’ and in Thayer’s Greek Lexicon the biblical Greek defines it as – “that act by which God looks into and searches out the ways, deeds, and character of men in order to adjudge them their lot accordingly, whether joyous or sad.”  The idea is inspection, investigation, and visitation.  It is, therefore, the time in which God Himself is manifested as gracious and offers salvation through Jesus Christ.

In this passage, Jesus is visibly and audibly moved by the reality of the inhabitants of Jerusalem’s spiritual blindness and rejection of the blessings of God.  Salvation through Jesus Christ has been offered, and they have failed to heed the call and accept His mercy and grace.  They did not recognize the time of their visitation!

The Kingdom of God had come to them, and they did not recognize it.  Why?  Jesus was there and therefore God was there, but they did not recognize the Kingdom of God.  Why?  Salvation had come to them and was available for them, but they did not recognize the Kingdom of God and accept salvation.  Why?

Why would anyone refuse this tremendous offer of forgiveness?  Why would anyone choose the pathway of condemnation to forgiveness?  Why would anyone take the pathway of eternal death to eternal life?  Why would anyone prefer garbage to gold?  Why would any intelligent, reasonable, sane person make such a choice?  There are more possibilities than I can address but let me address a few reasons why.

Number One – Religious Prejudice.

That may sound illogical to you but prejudice of any kind blinds to truth and fact.   Prejudice is to ‘pre-judge.’  It is to render a judgment before the facts are in and the evidence has been presented.  It is a judgment based upon bias rather than truth.  It is allowing preference to prevail over truth.

Remember the words of Nathaniel regarding the possibility of Jesus being the Messiah in John 1:46?  He said, “can anything good come out of Nazareth?”  In the Amplified, it reads, “Nazareth!  Can anything good come out of Nazareth!”  Remember the response of the citizens of Jesus’ hometown in Mark 6:3?  They said, “Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary?”  Remember the response of the Pharisees to Jesus in John 7:52?  We read, “…art thou also of Galilee?  Search out and look for out of Galilee arises no prophet.”

Prejudice as to how the Messiah would come prevented them from knowing the time of their visitation.  Prejudice as to what the Messiah would do prevented them from knowing the time of their visitation.  Prejudice as to how He would do what He did prevented them from knowing the time of their visitation.


In a measure it was bigotry.  That is seen in the response of the Pharisees when Jesus went to be the guest for lunch of a local resident in Luke 19:7. They murmured and said, “Scandalous, He has gone to be the guest of a sinner.” 

Because of their bias and prejudice via the religious leaders, their culture, and their selfish motivations they rejected to examine every possibility and listen to the message.  When He healed the sick, they said, “He has a devil.”  When He forgave, they said, “He was committing blasphemy.”  The Bible says, “He came to His own and they received Him not.”

Today many fail to find God because of religious prejudices.  Some never discover the victorious life because they have been taught it does not exist.  Some never accept salvation because they have been taught that this life is all there is. Religious prejudice destroys more lives spiritually than all the Hitlers of the world.

I want to address this more but will pause and wait until next time to address reason Number Two why people fail to perceive their time of visitation.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, AMERICA…


Text:  Zechariah 9:9-12; Psalm 145; Romans 7:21-8:6; Matthew 11:25-30

As we focus on July the Fourth our American Independence Day, it would behoove us to consider what Freedom is from a biblical as well as American perspective.  For all my friends outside the USA, this is somewhat a regional message but has a universal application. In America, this is one holiday, the three-day weekend that people have not attempted to move to a Monday.  I believe that this has been because the date itself is such a powerful icon: the anniversary of our nation’s birth with the signing of the Declaration of Independence on a sultry Philadelphia summer day:

“We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all “men” are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.”

Those powerful words were words of no return. Those ideals launched a nation into an unknown future and charted its course. Those are powerful words that many of us memorized in grade school and have spent the rest of our lives trying to live up to.  Those are powerful words that frame the very essence of what it is to be an American. They are words worth celebrating on the anniversary of their signing.  The anniversary of our freedom as a Republic is important but pales in comparison to our freedom in Jesus through the new birth!

The signing of the Declaration of Independence was deemed by many to be the Death Warrant for the Anglican Church, the Church of England, at least in “the colonies.”  It was an open door to a new freedom of the pursuit of personal faith.  Most of the citizens of this new republic saw it as freedom not only governmentally but religiously. 

As a nation, the freedom we enjoy was bought for us by those who went before: our founding fathers and mothers who had the courage and vision to imagine a nation “conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.”

They made the down payment — in blood sweat and tears — and subsequent generations have made “balloon payments” ever since: claiming and reclaiming that vision of a nation with liberty and justice for all.  We all need to remember that none of us are free unless all of us are free.  The birthing of a nation began in 1776 and continues today!

Likewise, our spiritual freedom — our salvation — was bought for us by the generations who have gone before. Abraham and Sarah and their faithfulness to their covenant with Yahweh; the Hebrew people who received God’s law through Moses and were called again and again into faithfulness by the prophets; and Jesus, our Lord, and Savior, who paid the ultimate price of his life upon the cross that we might live. Freedom is never free or cheap, our spiritual freedom cost the Blood of Jesus!

Jesus paid the once-and-for-all price that we are called to claim and re-claim as we proclaim the Good News of God in Christ Jesus in our generation.  Going to all the world and proclaiming this Good News is the price we are asked to pay, and how we pay cries out our value of freedom and our love for our fellowman. It has everything to do with how “free” we are! There is amazing freedom in calling others to Christ not because we have to in order to “earn” our salvation, but because we can do nothing less in response to the amazing gift of God’s love.

As we celebrate freedom this Independence Day, both as Americans and as Christians, Paul’s experience offers parallels to our own, as a church and as a culture.  For as much as we desire to do good, we far too often fall short of the mark: and wonder what went wrong.

As Christians, again and again, our ability to proclaim the Gospel is hampered by internal squabbles and quarrels about power that masquerade as debates over doctrine; fights with each other that so consume our energy we have nothing lift to give to the work of calling others to Christ.

As a country, over and over our efforts to ensure the freedom of one people seem to lead to the oppression of another.  It seems that no matter how hard we work to “do good,” some evil fallout is the result. And here at home, as hard as we try to make the Pledge of Allegiance come true, we have yet to truly ensure liberty and justice for all. Where do we turn for answers?

Let us turn again to Paul’s words as contained in The Message:

“I have tried everything, and nothing helps. I am at the end of my rope. Is there no one who can do anything for me? Isn’t that the real question? The answer, thank God, is that Jesus Christ can and does. He acted to set things right in this life of contradictions where I want to serve God with all my heart and mind but am pulled by the influence of sin to do something totally different.”

Where do we turn for answers?  The same place Paul did.  We turn to Jesus Christ. He can and does offer hope!  He said, “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden,” he said and says, “and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Those are words of promise and freedom that reveal that there is nothing we have to bear by ourselves: nothing too heavy for Jesus to bear with us. An invitation of profound reassurance, whether in the poetic language of the traditional translation or the accessible words of the paraphrase:

“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you will recover your life. I will show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me — watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I will not lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you will learn to live lightly and freely.”

“Come to me.” Jesus’ words in verse twenty-eight remind us of the words on the Statue of Liberty, “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free. The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.  Send these the homeless, tempest-tossed to me. I lift my lamp beside the golden door.”

The difference is, Freedom is not found in a place but a Person!  True Freedom is found in the One who guides us, strengthens us, feeds us, and sustains us.  We have a mission and a commission to bring this message of True Freedom to the World.  We have the message of Hope that Freedom cries out to bring.  We can be “born again” and in that state be the Body of Christ to the World and demonstrate Freedom!

Today, I would like to consider some pertinent revelations regarding Jesus’ statement to ‘Remember Lot’s Wife!’  I believe it will be beneficial to consider some things about Lot’s wife and her failure.

SHE PERISHED – Although she was the wife of a righteous man.

I suggest that Lot was not all he could be or should have been, but the fact he was being offered deliverance indicates he was a righteous man.  If we read 2 Peter 2:7-8 we see that reality.  “He rescued Lot; a righteous man deeply troubled by the shameless immorality of the wicked. (For that righteous man, while living among them, was tormented in his righteous soul day after day by lawless deeds he saw and heard.) I would also note that she was a relative by marriage to Abraham the father of faith.

SHE PERISHED – Although she was warned of the danger.

Imagine her situation.  A special message and messengers from heaven had come to warn them of the impending destruction and instructed them to escape for their lives.  That is applicable for today in that we are repeatedly warned in the Scriptures to flee the wrath to come and to come out from among them and be separate. 

In John 3:16 we have the amazing promise of Jesus,For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.”  God, the Father, loves us so much that He has done everything short of forcing us to serve Him.  He offers us the choice to receive His grace and mercy.  We can either believe, receive, and obey or we can be like Lot’s wife and look back to destruction.

SHE PERISHED – Although she made an effort to be saved.

She heard the warning that Lot and their two daughters heard.  She partially believed it and was led outside the city by the angels.  She ran in the right direction for a while but the longing for what she had left behind became too much and she looked back.  She did not or could not ‘forget the things that were behind.’  Like Simon the sorcerer in Acts 8:21, her heart was not right with God.

We need to be reminded that doing our best apart from a steadfast faith in Jesus will result in our perishing by the way.  We must continue in the faith and how we finish is far more important than how we begin.

SHE PERISHED – Although she became separated physically from the Sodomites.

Her physical body was outside the city, but it is clear that her heart was not.  Where the heart is that is where our treasure is.  What we love, we long for.  The command was ‘escape for your life and do not look back.’  Even though she may not have practiced the sins of the sodomites it seems that she was fatally in love with the world.  We are told to love not the world, nor the things that are in the world.  We must be separate in our devotion.

SHE PERISHED – Although she committed but one act of Rebellion.

I call it rebellion for we are told that obedience is better than sacrifice and that rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft.  This was an act of rebellion.  Her failure was unbelief.  Her failure was disobeying the command to not look back.  In Luke 9:62 our Lord said, “no man having put his hand to the plow and looking back is fit for the Kingdom of God.”  In Hebrews 10:38 we are instructed that “…the just shall live by faith, but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.”

God is offering us deliverance today.  He is offering it through the shed blood of Jesus.  We need to keep in the forefront of our minds and hearts the declaration of Matthew 6:21, “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”

It is one thing to say, “I am following the LORD” or “I will follow You LORD” but quite another to fully commit ourselves to Him and allow Him to be Lord of All in our lives.  Remember Lot’s wife – her love for this present world cost her eternity.  Jesus says, “Come!”

REMEMBER LOT’S WIFE…


Luke 17:32 – Remember Lot’s wife!” TLV

The title is not a question “Remember Lot’s wife? It is a warning.” I find that a most interesting statement inserted in Jesus’ discussion of the signs of the coming of the LORD and comparing it to Noah’s day.  It is one of the shortest statements of our LORD in the New Testament yet is impactful in more ways than I can fully convey in a short devotional. 

There are some very solemn reasons to ‘Remember Lot’s Wife!’  That is especially true as we draw near the return of Jesus.  Lot’s wife looked back and rendered herself unfit for the deliverance being afforded Lot’s family.  It is one of the most tragic pictures in the Bible.  Lot and his family were being led to freedom from destruction, but Lot’s wife disobeyed the directive and ‘looked back.’  Her looking back indicated a divided heart and disqualified her.

For anyone to be found unfit at the return of Jesus is a most tragic picture.  The account of Lot’s family brings to light some significant and interesting truths applicable for today.  In consideration of this verse, it is necessary to go back to the record of God’s deliverance of that family from the wickedness of Sodom.

Lot’s family and the families of today are quite similar in many respects.

  • Lot’s Family had religious orientation – They knew and believed in the Almighty God, Creator of Heaven, and Earth.
  • Lot’s Family was interested in self-betterment – Concerned with their own welfare.  I say that in light of the reason for Lot’s choice in separation from Abraham.  He chose what appeared best for him with little concern for his uncle.
  • Lot’s family had settled in and were planting their roots in that region and culture.  They had established themselves in the community.  Lot’s daughters were marrying the residents and Lot was on the City Council (so to speak).

The city of Sodom had become their home and, they had turned a blind eye to the evil and corruption going on around them.  They ignored the wickedness of the city and the abominations being committed.  They appear to have adopted the attitude of live and let live and sought acceptance by accepting the culture.

Lot’s family lived near the corruption in such a manner as to not be offensive to the inhabitants of the city.  They were not rocking the boat.  Their lives and roots had become established.  They found security and comfort in their surroundings.  Their lives were invested in the society in which they lived.  Their philosophy seemed to have been that would live quietly and not advertise their faith.

In today’s world, some have become so tied to possessions and their standing in the community, they are unable or unwilling to see the evil and destruction.  I suggest that Lot’s wife’s love for what she had indicated that her heart was in Sodom and that was more powerful than the directive to come out from among them and be separate.  It seems she longed for what she had more than she longed for the deliverance being offered. 

Therefore, the directive of Jesus is germane to us – Remember Lot’s Wife!  She looked back and lost her deliverance.  There is the danger of being so in love with what we have in this world we lose sight of what God is offering in Jesus.

BUT YOU WILL…


Acts 1:6-8 – “So when they had come together, they were asking Him, saying, “Lord, is it at this time You are restoring the kingdom to Israel?” 7 He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or epochs which the Father has fixed by His own authority; 8 but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.”  NASB

The disciples and the followers of Jesus in that day had a problem with the ‘natural restoration’ of the Kingdom of Israel.  They failed to grasp the full import of the truth that Jesus’ Kingdom was not an earthly one but a heavenly one.  They were looking to throw off the bonds of oppression from the Romans and see Israel restored as a sovereign nation once again. 

Jesus addressed this on more than one occasion and each time He would say, “It is not for you to know….”  On this occasion, He reminded them that knowing the times and seasons of what the Father had planned was not theirs to know but something important was in their immediate future and it would impact the known world.

You will receive POWER WHEN… When what?  When the Holy Spirit has come upon you.  The result of that infusion of power will be your ability to take this message of the gospel that He has given to us. We will take it to our Jerusalem, all Judea, Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.  You will Impact the World more through this than you would if I restored the nation of Israel as a sovereign earthly kingdom right now.  They did not receive that until the Day of Pentecost and the visitation of the Holy Spirit in a mighty way that truly and literally transformed their lives, and those around them, and as a result swept the world and is still sweeping it today.

Sometimes we are so involved and interested in ‘uncovering secrets’ that we fail to realize that the most important thing for any of us is to receive the infusion of the Holy Spirit’s life and power to enable us to take the message of the Cross and the Gospel to the world.  With the anointing of the Holy Spirit, we can deliver the witness of Jesus to the lost and do so with God’s Power which is able to convince, convict, and convert them.  The power that can rescue the lost from their lost-ness and translate them from the kingdom of darkness into God’s marvelous light!

So instead of trying to ‘uncover’ all the hidden secrets of the Bible.  Instead of attempting to establish dates and times for coming events.  Why not leave that in God’s hands and seek to be saturated with God’s life and power through the Holy Spirit and allow the Life of Christ to spill out onto those we come into contact with? 

Our task is to rescue the perishing, not to identify when God is going to do His next thing on His prophetic calendar.  I am not saying finding out what God is up to is bad, but it is not the most important thing to be able to predict what is coming and when.  We are ‘watchmen on the walls’ not simply ‘heralds of coming events’ to show our knowledge and skill at research and interpretation.  We are voices in the wilderness!
