Psalm 34

This Psalm is a remarkably interesting presentation.  The title of the Psalm in various translations is “Taste and See” and “The LORD is a Provider” to name a couple.  David’s fortunes were at a low point.  He had fled from Saul who wanted to kill him.  He was seeking refuge with Achish but was disappointed.  He had reached the point of being a fugitive, an outlaw, a dweller in dens and caves.  He does not have a large following at this point.

It is in this situation and condition that he pens the words of this Psalm and declared, “I will bless the LORD at all times.”  He says in verse two, “His praise is continually in my mouth.”  That is powerful.  The word continually can be understood as either ‘everyday’ or ‘many times each day.’

In the midst of incredible adversity, David’s focus was on the solution, not the situation.  He saw the answer rather than the affliction. He recognizes God and affirms his relationship with Him.  If we would give this Psalm a careful examination, we would find the beautiful secret to Spiritual Victory that far too many never discover.

It is a sad reality that a large segment of professing Christians suffers from a satanically inspired attitude problem.  That problem is what I would call Defeatism or Negativism.  That is reflected in their thinking and their speaking.  They have become cynical and critical of everything in life and everyone around them.

Sadly, the focus is upon the work of the devil not the provisions of God.  Unwittingly and often unknowingly they have allowed themselves to fall into the devil’s trap and by doing so defeat their purpose and progress.  They have everything backward and need an infusion of God’s Grace and Hope.

Too many spend their days wondering, fretting over, and even fearing what the devil is going to do.  I plead with everyone that is a Child of God to remember and rehearse in your mind that we belong to God.  Therefore, the devil should be wondering what we are going to do, through Jesus, not vice versa.

Verse one of this Psalm opens the window for understanding a major step to victory.  That is – Focus on God at all times and continually.  In Psalm 100:4 we are encouraged to “Enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise!”  We must focus on the Person of God, the Protection of God, and the Provisions of God.  There is no formula for victorious living it comes through focus!  Focus on God!

  • We Must Focus on God’s Person.

He is worthy of all praise!  David has filled his consciousness with God and all the wonderful things God has done.  In verses 3 and 7 David speaks of God’s Glory, not the devil’s work.  In verses 4,10,15 and 19 he speaks of the spiritual victories that are his through Jehovah, not the satanic influences and hindrances.  For any believer to enjoy the total victory and abundant life that God desires some things are imperative.  We must see God as He Is – Completely Sovereign.  We must see ourselves correctly – Completely Dependent upon God for life.  We must understand the right relationship, we are – Children of God.

Romans 8:37 – “But in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.”

1 John 4:4 – “You are from God, children, and you have overcome them, because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world.”

Who is He?  He is our Father, our Creator, our Deliverer, our Protector, our Guide, and our Savior!

I want to continue this thought of How We Need To See God in order to embrace and experience His Total Victory but will pause here.

God bless you as you enjoy this wonderful day He has made!
