Matthew 7:24-29 – “Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them, may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 “And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock. 26 “Everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 “The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and it fell — and great was its fall.” 28 When Jesus had finished these words, the crowds were amazed at His teaching; 29 for He was teaching them as one having authority, and not as their scribes.” NASU
Ephesians 5:18-21 – “And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord; 20 always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the Father; 21 and be subject to one another in the fear of Christ.” NASU
In continuing our consideration of the Early Church and the success they had several things come immediately to our attention.
THEY CHOSE TO BUILD ON THE ROCK – Christ Jesus.
Before their conversion, they were following the practices of their religion and their own hearts and in a very real sense, they were building upon the sand. The Law was their guide and they followed the customs and ideas of the priest. Man’s will is not God-like until it has been supernaturally changed through salvation.
Jesus opened a new and better way to them in Grace. He said, “Upon this Rock, I will build My Church.” There is no other foundation upon which we can build eternal spiritual buildings. Had the Early Church been content with what we are too often, the church would not be in existence today. Before Christ, they had to rebuild after every storm of life. Trials, tests, and difficulties stopped them but now they had a Foundation that was Eternal.
Jesus was their Rock of Ages. He is the Author and Finisher of our Faith and He is tried and proven. He is the anchor that holds no matter what storm comes and He gave them Hope in a hopeless world. He gave them confidence that they could overcome whereas before they had been accustomed to defeat and lived under the debt of sin. He taught them that they could be Holy because He Is Holy. They could be Victorious because He is Victorious. They could overcome the devil because He did. In Him, they lived and moved and had being.
THE WORD OF GOD WAS THEIR GUIDE AND FROM IT CAME THEIR STANDARD.
The Word lived in them. It was not simply something they read and heard but it lived inside their hearts. They had the Living Word living in them, in Jesus through the Power and Anointing of the Holy Spirit. The Word of God worked in their lives. It became a living reality they could apply to daily life situations. They continually searched the Scriptures and as they discovered the truths contained therein they applied those precepts and principles to their daily lives.
They studied to show themselves approved unto God. They sought to know God’s Word so they could lead others in right paths. They studied to be grounded. They had a deep desire to know God’s Promises and Provisions. They studied for guidance and their desire was to be “like Jesus”. They wanted to do more than represent Him, they wanted to manifest Him. They sought to be pure, honest, holy, free from unclean habits, modest, decent, and busy about the Master’s business.
They used biblical reasoning in everything they did. I find evidence that they sought to know what the Bible said on any given matter before forming a standard. They wanted to know that it would glorify God and was consistent with the Bible. They wanted to determine if what they planned would do harm or help. They sought to determine from the Word if their doctrines would increase or decrease faith.
THEIR GOALS WAS TO EVANGELIZE AND DISCIPLE THE ENTIRE WORLD.
Their love for God motivated them and the Commandment of Jesus was ever present in their thinking. They knew their message and refused to deviate from it. They were not looking for some new trendy way to entertain but sought to bring deliverance from sin to lives. They knew the Power by which they operated was the Power of the Holy Spirit. They knew their authority was directly given by Jesus in His defeat of the devil.
God’s call for us today is to reevaluate our foundation and be sure we are founded on Jesus. He wants us to revise our mindset and develop an expectation that the Word will produce the same effect it produced in them. He wants us to operate with the mentality that He is the same yesterday.
It is God’s desire that we live in the atmosphere of heaven and have the culture of the Kingdom of God in our daily lives and in our churches. We can move the world through Him so let’s do it!
God bless you as you enjoy this wonderful day in Him!
