THIS IS MY GOD…

Philippians 4:19 – “And my God shall supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”  NASB

I have said many times, “The Bible is an Amazing Book!”  That is an understatement and quite obvious, but some still seem to miss its importance and impact.  It has a word for every man and an answer for every situation.  God does not sit idle or remain silent in the face of man’s dilemma but speaks and acts!  He is not only Sovereign but Active!  That is Amazing and Powerful!

Charles Spurgeon, arguably one of the greatest preachers of any time said that he constantly feared lest amid preaching he would fall into preaching about the Gospel rather than preaching the Gospel.  That is arresting to this preacher.  His counter to that potential dilemma was, he would select a passage so familiar that there was virtually nothing new to say about it.  That compelled him to declare the Plain Truths of the Gospel without the slightest attempt at novelty or brilliance.  Just the Gospel and nothing more!

The verse that I am using for this devotional is one of those passages. It is one of the best known and best-loved by believers everywhere.  It is quoted often to comfort and inspire the heart in troubled times and times of need.  It has blessed more hearts than can be counted.  It has been preached upon times without number.  Who shall say anything new about it?  Who needs to say anything new about it?  It speaks for itself and is incredibly powerful.

For me, this verse becomes fresh and new every time I read it.  It is Alive!  It is alive with Promise.  It is alive with Hope.  It is alive with Power.  It is alive with Potential.  “But my God shall…”  “But my God shall…”  Let that resonate and echo in your heart and mind.  He is my God.  He is your God.  He is Alive and Active!

I find it very interesting and intriguing to note the background of this passage.  Here the apostle Paul in a time of poverty, imprisonment, abandonment, and need had just received a love-gift from the little church in Philippi far away.  The gift may or may not have been much in terms of money, but the love behind it was priceless in the mind of the apostle.  It was here that he writes: “But my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”  Wow!  The one blessed becomes the blesser and releases this powerful word of blessing upon those who had blessed him.

The verse was written in response to the Philippian Church’s act of love and benevolence, but the verse is not simply an expression of goodwill.  It is more than a ‘thank you card.’  It has power beyond what is seen on the surface.

IT IS AN ASSURANCE…

This incredible prayer or blessing came from an inspired pen and is a God-given pledge to all of us of His Divine Sufficiency.  What a Promise!  What a Pledge!  What a source of Hope, Strength, Power, and Inspiration!  “But my God shall…”  The emphasis is on God and shall.

Sometimes impious men take the expression “My God” in a blasphemous oath.  But the believer can take these words on his/her lips and find the sweetness and strength of the Almighty, “My God!”   Listen to the sound of completeness in those two words, “My God!”

It is Personal, He is My God!  In a general sense, He is God to every human being.  In Him, we live and move and have being.  It is to Him that we will all give account.  But in a personal sense, He is “My God!”  It reveals a Covenant Relationship.  The Eternal God has promised to provide for us.  The Eternal, uncreated God without beginning or end has promised to Care for us.  That is incredible!

It is in His Covenant that we find Grace and the Hope of Eternal Salvation through Jesus Christ.  Jesus said in John 10:29, “My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all, and no man is able to pluck them from My Father’s hand.”  Hallelujah!  He repeats that in a fashion in John 17.

Therefore, it is by His Covenant that the Words of God through the prophet become applicable to God’s people.  He said, “I will put my law in their inward parts and write it in their hearts, and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.”  What a Promise!  He is My God!  He has chosen to be My God!  If He is “My God” then how dare I say anything less than “He will supply all my need!”

I want to pursue this further but will pause here for today and tomorrow consider the Incredible Promise of this declaration.  May the LORD be with you, guard and guide you as you embark on today’s leg of life’s journey.

Be Blessed richly is my prayer and desire!

SOWING AND REAPING – Part Two…

Galatians 6:7-10 – “Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap. 8 For the one who sows to his own flesh shall from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit shall from the Spirit reap eternal life. 9 And let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we shall reap if we do not grow weary.”  NASB

Continuing the thought of Sowing and Reaping. We mentioned in the last devotional the need to offer a Word of Warning and a Word of Encouragement.  Let’s get to those now.

A SOLEMN REMINDER – “Be not deceived God is not mocked.”  (v.7)

No one will ever harvest grapes from thorn bushes or figs from thistles.  No one will ever produce the fruit of the Spirit from the works of the flesh.  The flesh cannot produce the things of the Spirit of God.  In Matthew 7:17-18 – we read, “Even so, every good tree bears good fruit; but the bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 “A good tree cannot produce bad fruit, nor can a bad tree produce good fruit.”

We are told that “by their fruits, men will know them.”  The warning is “Be Not Deceived.”  That is a stern, valid, and needed warning.  We are too easily deceived and too easily deceive ourselves.  We deceive ourselves through false expectations or unrealistic expectations.  We deceive ourselves through trusting appearance and being guided by our emotions or feelings rather than God’s Word and Promises.

We deceive ourselves when we convince ourselves that it does not matter what we sow if our intentions are good.  Wouldn’t that be wonderful for the farmer?  He could have good intentions and sow any kind of seed and expect to get whatever harvest he preferred and was the most profitable.  The flesh will never produce the fruit of the Spirit and bring victory.

God is not mocked and will not be silenced or put to shame by man’s indifference or unbelief regarding this eternal and unalterable law.  Spiritual things can never be produced by carnal things.  The unregenerate man cannot bring forth the fruits of the new creation.  The flesh and the Spirit are as different as life and death.  The person outside of Christ sows to the flesh and reaps the corruption of that life. The Child of God sows to the eternal things of God and reaps everlasting life – (v.8)

A WORD OF ENCOURAGEMENT – “Be now weary in well doing for in due season we will reap if we faint not.” (v.9)

We all need encouragement especially in difficult and trying times of life.  In many areas of life, our harvest has not yet come but it is coming.  We cannot continue to sow wild oats and pray for crop failure and expect to be successful.  It is important that we continually sow to character and godliness so that the harvest will produce life-giving fruit and touch many lives.

Please stop trying to do enough, earn enough, merit enough and view your labors as your significance.  That will only discourage.  Rather than looking at what you do, consider why you do what you do and listen for His directive.  Being busy is not what is important but being obedient is.

There is going to be a Harvest in our individual lives.  No, there will be multiple harvests throughout our lives, and we will Reap what we Sow.  We will Reap WHAT we sow.  We will reap LATER than we sow.  We will reap MORE than we sow, but we will reap, and we are sowing!

The question is what kind of harvest do you want?  Then my advice is sow those seed and believe God for His harvest to produce the fruit of righteousness and life.

May the Lord be with you and bless you as you enjoy this wonderful day in Him!

SOWING AND REAPING…

Galatians 6:7-10 – “Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap. 8 For the one who sows to his own flesh shall from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit shall from the Spirit reap eternal life. 9 And let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we shall reap if we do not grow weary.”  NASB

In the 5th Chapter, verses 17-25, there is a description of the ‘works of the flesh’ and the ‘fruit of the Spirit.’  The contrast is clearly between rottenness and perfect soundness.  It is a clear differentiation between the basest and the best.

The works of the flesh are separate individual acts whereas the fruit (not fruits) of the Spirit are all of one.  They are manifold in expression but of the same root and fruit.  The fruit is the outcome of the energy of the indwelling Spirit of God, and “against such, there is no law.”  That is important and powerful.

Here in our text, the apostle Paul brings us to the consideration of sowing to the flesh and to the Spirit and contrasts the two.  We see both the events and the results in a very powerful description.  In his discourse, we discover several very important truths.

THIS IS AN UNALTERABLE LAW.

Galatians 3:7 – “Whatsoever a man sows, this he will also reap.”  That never changes.  You get what you plant and not some modification or mutation of what you have planted.  The Seed is critical.  We will harvest or reap, not according to how much we know or even who we know, but according to what we sow.  That is unalterable!

We may have a large cache of seed in the barn of the mind, but unless that seed is planted in fertile soil there will be no benefit and no fruitful harvest.  The seeds of thought are sown in words and deeds.  The ‘Word of God’ is the incorruptible seed as confirmed in 1 Peter 1:23 and that seed will always bring forth ‘after its kind.’

The Soil is important because in life and in the Spirit, there are two types of soil.  The Flesh and the Spirit.  Sowing to the flesh is to sow rotten seed in poisonous soil.  Nothing but corruption can result from that activity.  When we sow to the flesh we sow to our carnal, self-pleasing, worldly lives and nothing productive can come from it.  There is nothing in that activity that honors God, so it will rot like a lifeless carcass producing rottenness, not life-giving fruit.

Conversely, to Sow to the Spirit is to sow to the revealed Will of God, that which is pleasing to Him.  It is then that the Fruit of the Spirit will begin to be manifested.  From that fruit people will be nourished and lives changed positively for good.

I feel the need to offer a word of Warning and a word of Encouragement but because of the brevity of time and space, I will hold those thoughts for the next devotional.  Until then, I encourage you to seek the mind of God and make Matthew 6:33 a key cornerstone in your life.  Seek Him FIRST and then everything else will fall into place with clarity and productivity.

God bless you as you continue your journey of Faith in Him!

HEIRS ACCORDING TO THE PROMISE…

Galatians 3:29 – “And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise.”  NASB

I suggest that you study Chapter 3:1 through 4:7 for the full impact of this truth.  As I begin this consideration, I re-read Galatians 3:13-14 – “Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us —  for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree” —  14 in order that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.”  It helped me focus and directed my attention to the Powerful Truth and Promise recorded here in Galatians.

From the very beginning of time, God has been concerned about man, his prime creation.  Man was created in the image and likeness of God.  He was given dominion over the earth and all that was in it.  Man had very close fellowship with God, his creator in the Garden of Eden.  Man was created in a state of innocence, free from all sin and uncleanness.  He was pure and holy walking before God.  Tragically, man fell through disobedience and was driven from the Paradise on Earth.  The result was, all mankind was doomed for sin had entered and alienated man from God who knows no sin.  Paradise was lost because of sin.  That is tragic!

God could have just written man off at that point and we could have become an afterthought in His mind.  He could have ceased reaching out to man with the desire to cleanse, forgive, restore, and heal him, but He didn’t.           God saw the wickedness of man and spoke to Noah, the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, and declared that He was going to destroy the race because of iniquity.  God sought to preserve a line of humanity that would recognize Him and return to Him.  Tragically, man once again, after the flood began to wax wanton and drifted back into iniquity.  God could have tossed us on the trash heap of life, but He didn’t.  That is amazing!

God spoke to Abraham in the land of Ur of the Chaldees and instructed him to leave his home, his family, his friends, and all that he knew.  The directive was that God, the Creator of All Things would lead him to a land flowing with milk and honey and give Abram an inheritance.  Abram obeyed not knowing where he was going.  This was the reintroduction of faith to the race in a very powerful manner.  From that obedience comes the Covenant of Promise and that to which you and I are heirs.

God Made the Promise (Covenant) to Abraham.  He promised to give to him and his descendants the Promised Land (Canaan).  In a very real sense, this was the Promise of Salvation that preceded the Law.  Abraham believed God and the Bible tells us he was justified by faith.  Abraham then acted upon his belief and obeyed the directive of the LORD.  The Bible tells us in Hebrews 11:8-10 – “By faith he lived as an alien in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, fellow heirs of the same promise; 10 for he was looking for the city which has foundations, whose architect and builder is God.”

Jesus Confirmed the Covenant.  We read in Galatians 3:15-17 – “Brethren, I speak in terms of human relations: even though it is only a man’s covenant, yet when it has been ratified, no one sets it aside or adds conditions to it. 16 Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. He does not say, “And to seeds,” as referring to many, but rather to one, “And to your seed,” that is, Christ. 17 What I am saying is this: The Law, which came four hundred and thirty years later, does not invalidate a covenant previously ratified by God, so as to nullify the promise.”

When a will is made, and the will-maker dies there can be no change in the terms of the will!  Jesus sealed the Covenant through His death on the Cross and brought it to full implementation in His Resurrection and Ascension to the Father.  God’s Promise can never be made null and void.  It has been forever confirmed.  That is cause for rejoicing!

We are Heirs According to the Promise.  We sing, “This world is not my home, I’m just passing through.”  That is a legitimate truth.  We are pilgrims sojourning in a strange land.  Our citizenship is of heaven, not just this earth.  We are, like the patriarchs of old, looking for a city whose builder and maker is God.  We are desirous of God’s Kingdom to come and His will to be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Here in Galatians, we are reminded that “If we are Christ’s…”  If we are THEN, the Promise is ours too!  If we are Abraham’s seed, by faith, then the Promises of Abraham are God’s Promises to you and me, those who believe!

God’s promise to Abraham was a Land of Promise.  He would make him a great nation.  He would bless him and bless those that blessed him and curse those that cursed him.  He would be the heir of the whole earth.  When I consider that the New Covenant is a Better Covenant established on better promises than the Old, I rejoice.

In the old they were to be the head and not the tail.  They were to be above not beneath.  They were to be overcomers not overcome.  We are ‘more than conquerors’ through Jesus!  We are the Sons and Daughters of God and are no more servants but Sons and Daughters.  We are Heirs through Jesus to All the Promises of God!

It is time that we become what God says we are and realize that He has given us authority over the power of the enemy, and we are IN HIM and HE (Jesus) is IN US.  Rejoice in who and whose you are!

God bless you as you enjoy this wonderful day in Jesus!

FORGIVENESS – Conclusion…

Matthew 18:21-22 – “Then Peter came and said to Him, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me and I forgive him? Up to seven times?” 22 Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven.”  NASB

Let’s take one more look at the topic of Forgiveness, Fellowship, and Repentance and consider the important dimension of Pronouncing Forgiveness.  You may ask, “What are you talking about?”  I hope, in this devotional, to address that in a coherent manner that brings understanding and liberty.

I am convinced that much of the Christian Church has missed this truth or pushed it to the back burner theologically.  We say, rightly, that only God can truly forgive sins.  However, we sometimes fail to acknowledge that this dimension comes through the work of the Holy Spirit and that we become vehicles through which people receive forgiveness.  Before you brand me, a heretic let me continue.

James 5 instructs us to ‘Confess’ our sins to one another?  Why?  What do you do after someone confesses?  Do we gossip?  What do we do?  What we should be doing, biblically is Pronouncing Forgiveness.  No, I am not trying to make the Evangelical Church a participant in papal ministry.  Why do people confess?

There are two basic reasons for this action.  First, it breaks the fear of exposure and second, it frees from condemnation.  Let me challenge you to remember that Pronouncing Forgiveness was one of the first gifts associated with receiving the Holy Spirit in John 20:22-23.   Look at these verses carefully, “And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 “If you forgive the sins of any, their sins have been forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they have been retained.”  Being forgive is one of the greatest needs any person can experience.

In Matthew 6 the topic of Forgiving Others comes into view powerfully.  If we do not forgive others, God will not forgive us.  How much and how often do we need to forgive?  We should never hide anyone’s sins or judge them in that sin.  We should love them and attempt to help them come to the Light for Victory.

Let me offer some serious counsel.  If you are having difficulty forgiving people, purpose in your heart to pray for them every day.  I am totally convinced that you cannot genuinely and honestly pray for someone and not sense the heart of God toward them begin to arise in your own heart.  It may take weeks, months, and even years but it will happen.

There is incredible danger in withholding forgiveness.  Proverbs 17:13 declares, “He who returns evil for good, evil will not depart from his house.”  Who wants to live there?  No one!  We acknowledge that it is good to forgive so the converse is also true.  There is a dramatic difference between forgiveness and judgment.

If someone lies to me ten times, I can forgive them each time but, in my heart, I see that person as a liar.  Oh, I dealt with a few instances or incidents, but I have a judgment that that person is a liar.  Therefore, when I see them, I see a “Liar.”  I have forgiven the sins, but I am still judging the person.  Unless I pronounce Forgiveness, I will never see them other than how I have judged them.

God is a God of Restoration and seeks to bring Wholeness!  Let me challenge you to stop saying, “I’m sorry,” when you ask for forgiveness.  What?  I suggest that you say, “Would you forgive me?”  Then they can release what is in their heart and become free and release me to be free too.

A Word of Caution.  Don’t rush to people and tell them what you have thought or felt about them and what they have done.  They may be totally unaware of the matter.  Rather, Forgive, them before they confess.  In your heart forgive them.  When they come to you to give you the details you can say, “I forgive you.  I don’t even want to know what you thought.”

I have found that there are people who want you to know all the bad things they thought about you.  Not out of repentance but they want you to know how horrible you are, in their view.  They are hoping to elicit a response from you that will transform you to the image they believe you should be.  It is when someone comes to me to tell me some ill-thought, they had about me, I say, “I forgive you” and stop them before they begin.

Of course, there are some things that need to be confessed to a spiritual counselor or elder in a time of ministry in order to receive full deliverance and victory.  But that time of confession must never be a forum to dump on someone.  Forgiveness is not only powerful but necessary for true and full spiritual victory.

  • Identify the Areas of Unforgiveness in Your Own Life.
  • Repent and Ask for Forgiveness.
  • Release all Bitterness and Judgments.
  • Then Receive Forgiveness.

I pray that these few devotionals have been beneficial and each of us can receive full victory spiritually over the deception of the devil, unforgiveness and enter into Fellowship and Restoration.

God bless you as you enjoy this beautiful day in Jesus!

FORGIVENESS – Part Four…

Matthew 18:21-22 – “Then Peter came and said to Him, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me and I forgive him? Up to seven times?” 22 Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven.”  NASB

Let’s continue in this process and discussion regarding Forgiveness, Fellowship, and Repentance.  The Bible tells us in Psalms 51:17 that “God loves a broken and contrite heart.”  Why is that important?  Because False Repentance is nothing more than Emotion and produces no Freedom.  We see an example of it in Hebrews 12:17 where we read of Esau’s emotional outburst seeking repentance but could not find it.  Sorrow was present but not Repentance.

Paul addressed both Sorrow and Repentance in 2 Corinthians 7:9-10.  If there is sorrow but no true repentance, there is no victory.  It is always a matter of heart not emotions.  I’ve heard preachers insist that someone at the altar had not repented because they were not crying.  That is absurd because emotional tears are not a genuine or valid sign of repentance.

Unfortunately, there are too many times when people are sorry that they got caught and for the impending consequences but not for what they did.  Children may scream and holler because they got caught, but not because of what they did.  They are traumatized over what is coming not the root of what they did.  Repentance will get you delivered and set free.

I must offer a warning – You cannot simply sit down and decide you are going to repent.  It is not emotion it requires a work of the Holy Spirit bringing conviction to the heart.  In Acts 11:18 we read, “God has granted to the Gentiles also repentance that leads to life.”  That’s what we are looking for!

I have discovered that if a person is not genuinely repentant it is virtually a waste of time trying to minister to them.  However, most people that I deal with are, at least, somewhat repentant.  But a non-repentant person usually exhibits a spirit of “Self-Justification.”  One of the reasons that people get angry and stay angry is because of what someone did to them.  They have adopted the mindset of being a Victim!

One more caution that I feel compelled to offer is we are to Confess our sins.  Some people want to talk about what somebody has done to them.  There can be a benefit in getting it all out in the open but then the next step must be taken.  As you reveal what has been done to you God has shown you what you must now do.  You have to Forgive!  You have to forgive all those people for all those things.  You will also have to Repent for receiving the anger, the heartache, and the rejection you accepted.  You have to repent of believing the devil’s lies and agreeing with him.

Luke 6:41-42 – Is powerful.  We have to take the logs out of our own eyes before we can address the specks in the eyes of others.  If we can get people to come to the reality that they have issues too, they will see more clearly with open eyes and hearts.

Psalms 32:1-7 – It is a Covenant Blessing to have sin removed from our hearts.  There can be no deceit, no hiding of transgressions.  There must be openness and transparency of heart.  Scientists have discovered that bitterness causes physical maladies such as arthritis and heart conditions.  Confess your bitterness!

Matthew 18:34-35 – If we do not forgive others, from our hearts, the Tormentors will come, and they are evil and harsh taskmasters.  Confession frees from Guilt and brings Freedom!

At the risk of over laboring in this area, I will bring one more devotional because I believe that Forgiveness is a key to Freedom!  In the next devotional we will discuss another aspect that is also critical and that is Pronouncing Forgiveness.  Until then, may the LORD be with you and help you move forward in Christ Jesus!

Blessings as you enjoy this wonderful day in Him!

FORGIVENESS – Part Three…

Matthew 18:21-22 – “Then Peter came and said to Him, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me and I forgive him? Up to seven times?” 22 Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven.”  NASB

Hopefully, you have or will read through verse 35 to get the full impact of the Truth taught in this passage.  As we have considered Forgiveness and Fellowship, we must not miss the truth that Jesus has promised to Not Reject Us!   He promised in John 6:37 that He would not reject anyone that comes to Him.

Confession is important but there must be the exercise of wisdom in where and when you confess.  The person to whom you are confessing must be a righteous counselor not a physician of no value.  Their objective is to see you restored not to gain ammunition for gossip.

A glaringly obvious truth is that to be truly forgiven there must be repentance.  That is not the imposition of some new law, requirement, rule, or regulation we can impose on the one repenting.  The problem is, the heart will not release what it has not repented of.  I hope you heard that.  Let me repeat it, “The Heart Will Not Release What It Has Not Repented Of!”

Do not fall for the trap and become ensnared by the devil.  I’ve had people who clearly were dealing with unforgiveness say, “But, Roy, I’ve been over that a long time!”  I often think and a few times have said, “Oh, Really! Then how come when it comes up you start crying, get angry, grow cold, and even sick?  How come you still carry the guilt or shame of it?”  The Bible tells us that God removes it as far as the East is from the West, so how is it that we still have it and can easily find it?

Repentance is the key.  In 1 John 1:9 we read, “If we confess our sins…”  That involves doing a 180-degree turn and going the other direction.  The word Confess is the Greek (Homologeo) which means to confess by way of admitting that we are guilty of what we are accused of.  We did it!  That is the result of inward conviction.  Therefore, to Confess is to Repent.  It is not just saying words.  It is from the heart.  It is the admission of guilt and accepting responsibility for the actions or words and turning from it.  It involves Godly Sorrow!

Let me share an illustration that hopefully will resonate and provide benefit.  Let me paint a picture of a situation where a person said, “I didn’t like my father.”  I said, “You didn’t like him?”  They responded, “Well, I did resent him a little.”  I said, “You resented him a little?”  Hold your horses.  I then walked through the accounts they had revealed, and I said, “If my father had beat my mother, cheated on her and sexually abused my sister and beat me until I bled and could hardly walk, I would not resent him a little. It would be much more than resented a little.”  They then said, “Well, I really was angry with my father and I guess I had a little bit of bitterness.”  I said, “NO!  It is far more than that it is Full Blown Hate!”

Why would I press the issue that much?  Because I understand that God is seeking a match in our hearts with what He sees with His eyes.  Honesty always precedes Repentance.  Never hide behind false religious expectations.  Be completely honest it is the only pathway to True Freedom!

I’ve heard people say, “Well, I was out fooling around a little.”  NO!  You were committing fornication or adultery not fooling around a little.  Honesty in repentance will bring Freedom but lying and deception will only make the matter worse.  The depth of our confession will determine the depth of our Freedom!  If we call it what God knows it is, we can receive the Fullness of His Pardon. That is the Key to Forgiveness!

I realize that I may be stirring up a hornet’s nest in this discussion, but I have at least one more area that I want to address so we will pause until the next time.  I pray that the LORD will help you honestly and fully evaluate all things in your heart and life and propel you to Full Victory.

May the Lord richly bless you on this wonderful day in Him!

FORGIVENESS – Part Two…

Matthew 18:21-22 – “Then Peter came and said to Him, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me and I forgive him? Up to seven times?” 22 Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven.”  NASB

Again, I suggest you read through verse 35 for the full impact of this discussion on Forgiveness or the lack thereof.  I want to call your attention to something that will prevent you from receiving total freedom.  That is a mindset that is rooted in fallacy or misconception.

I have heard people argue, “But I haven’t done anything wrong.  This was done to me and it is unfair!”  That may all be true but if we allow the ‘Self Pity Syndrome’ to take root we will find ourselves in the Prison of Unforgiveness and bound beyond our wildest imagination.  If we allow ourselves to become The Victim, we are defeated.  If that is or become the condition in any aspect of your life, it must be eradicated immediately.  Your Freedom is hanging in the balance.

The crux of the matter is whether or not we receive what has been done to us and become owner of it or a victim.  What I mean by that is, the devil delivers a package to our front door and we can either sign for it and take delivery or reject it.  It truly is a choice.  Jesus said, “Forgive them for they know not what they do.”  I hope you can grasp the power of that statement and attitude.  Jesus separated the sin from the sinner and the act from the person committing the act.  He was saying, “I see that the enemy is attempting to use them to pull me down, but I reject his tactics.”  In 2 Corinthians 10, we are informed that our warfare is not with flesh and blood.  Therefore, it is not imperative or required that we take offense.

Let’s address ‘Self-Pity.’  That means they are doing this to me.  I can blame everyone and everything for the problem or situation.  I am simply a Victim.  That mindset is vicious and destructive.

I’ve prayed with people who have allowed Self-Pity to take root but when I tried to console them, the condition worsened and made my task more difficult.  We must never focus on “Fairness” for that will exacerbate the problem and make healing and deliverance far more difficult it not impossible.  God never promised that life would be fair or easy.  That tactic is one of the schemes of the devil to get us to focus on Fairness.

We can never have a ‘non-aggression pact’ with the devil.  We are engaged in war with him.  There is an amazing passage in 1 John 2:1 that is problematic and encouraging at the same time.  It gives God’s Standard that we Not Sin.  But it also provides the encouragement that If We Do there is hope.  But the objective is still the objective that we Do Not Sin!

In 1 John 1:6 there is “if” and in 1:7, “but if.”  Then in verse 8, 9, 10 we encounter the word “if” again.  If, if, if, if…  That makes it all conditional and places an emphasis on our cooperation with the divine and resistance to the devil.

In seeking to live as one who Forgives and lives in Forgiveness, we must also encounter another word and truth – Fellowship.  The word in the Greek is (koinonia) which means ‘community, joining, and fitting together.’  Hebrews 10:25 instructs that we are to not forsake the assembling of ourselves together.  To make that simply going to a church service is to do injustice to the truth of (koinonia).  We go to church, but we are the church.  For us to be ‘assembled’ we must become transparent and interdependent.  The devil offers a lie that too many buy into and attempts to isolate and separate us.  That is a device of the devil that must be overcome and exposed.

One of the major preventatives or hindrances to being ‘assembled’ and (koinonia) is our Fear of Exposure.  Assembling is putting all the parts in the right place to fulfill their particular and specific function and purposes.  It is through this process that the Body is built up in love and becomes a Spiritual House, a Body, a Community, an Army, and a Family.

We must learn to release the “hidden things” because of shame.  We must become willing to ‘expose’ it, ‘repent’ of it, and ‘release’ it.  When we do, we break the devil’s power to bind us and open the door for God to pour in His love and mercy.  Freedom Come through Forgiveness!

We will pick this up more in the next devotional but until then, I pray that the LORD will help you become willing to be assembled and to discover freedom from the Fear of Exposure and Shame.

May the Lord bless you richly on this beautiful day in Him!

FORGIVENESS

Matthew 18:21-22 – “Then Peter came and said to Him, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me and I forgive him? Up to seven times?” 22 Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven.”  NASB

I ask that you read through verse 35 for this discussion on Forgiveness.  If we have not discovered that the devil uses ‘schemes’ to entrap and harm us, we need to acknowledge that reality.  It is important that we uncover or discover his schemes so that we can effectively defeat him and destroy the works of darkness in our lives and spheres of influence.  As we discover the schemes and our weaponry provided by the Grace of God and the Power of the Holy Spirit, we are able to receive Forgiveness, Defeat the devil, and help others be Free of his diabolical destruction in their lives.

In this process, we find it necessary to address the matter of Forgiveness of the lack thereof.  That is one of the major areas in which the devil gains legal ground in the lives of believers and unbelievers.  Jesus identified just how important this truth is:

Matthew 6:12 – “Forgive us (as) we forgive others.”   (The as is the key or a key that too often we omit or overlook.)

Matthew 6:14 – “(If) we forgive others, God will forgive us.”  (Don’t miss the key.)

Matthew 18:21 – “How often are we to forgive?”  (Never numeric specifics.)

Matthew 18:35 – “God’s forgiveness to us is tied to our forgiving others.”

Mark 11:25 – Forgiving others is the key to God’s forgiveness but also answers to prayers.

Luke 6:37 – A Rule and Principle of Life – We Reap What We Sow.

The Law of Retribution flows to its inevitable conclusion UNLESS forgiveness is accomplished in the heart.  This is validated in James 1:13-15.  The matter of anger is a prime example.  What I mean is, ‘anger’ is a stimulus.  It engenders a response and each response becomes a stimulus to the other party or parties which then produces a response from them and becomes a stimulus that perpetuates the condition or situation.

(i.e.) – Arguments incite fights.  Group hassles morph into riots.  National tensions become wars.  (James 4:1-2).  The Law of Stimulus and Response. The Law of Sowing and Reaping or Retribution flows to its natural conclusion UNLESS Forgiveness is practiced.

Let me caution that Will Power or suppressing responses only delay the inevitable.  If it is seething in the heart it will eventually become a full-blown reality in life.  Therefore, the only remedy is ‘The Cross’.  Jesus is truly the only answer to the condition of harboring hurt or resentment in the heart and is the key to Forgiveness!

Tragically, we sometimes find that something has blinded our minds and obscured the Cross, creating a situation in which we are held captive.  We become ‘bound’ and ‘bent’ toward destruction UNLESS there is outside or divine help.  It does involve our will, but it is far more than mere will-power.

None of us would have a problem with Forgiveness were it not for the condition of Sin!  Too often, I’ve heard people argue, “But, I’m only human or I’m not perfect.”  Those statements are true but can never be a justification for sin or failure to forgive.

God’s Standard and Plan is for us to become ‘totally transformed’ so that we do not sin!  Jesus always meets us where we are, in all of our sinfulness, and brings us up to His level.  It is a Process!

Jesus informed us in Luke 6:40 that the student or disciple is not above his teacher, but when fully trained he becomes like the teacher.  In 1 John 4:17, we are told that our objective is to be “as Jesus is” in this present world.  We learn in the Psalms that we become like what we focus on or worship.  Then in Jude 24, we discover that Jesus is able to keep us from stumbling and 1 John 2:6 instructs that “he who abides in Him (Jesus) ought to walk as He (Jesus) walks.”

I realize that I have not gotten to the nuts and bolts of forgiveness but hope that I have elevated your focus as to the importance of Forgiving and being Forgiven.  We will address that more in upcoming devotionals.  Until then, may the Lord richly bless you and help you to enjoy His fullness, grace, mercy, and peace.

Have a fantastic day in Him today!

WHAT CAN I DO? – – Grandparents Part Two…

Revelation 22:1 –“And he showed me a river of the water of life, clear as crystal, coming from the throne of God and of the Lamb,” NASB

Ecclesiastes 7:1 – “A good name is better than a good ointment, and the day of one’s death is better than the day of one’s birth.”  NASB

I want to call several things to our attention regarding the Family, Parents, and especially Grandparents, as that is the primary focus of my devotional.

First, I ask that you consider the Despair of Grandparenthood.  Before you protest and say, “Despair?” let me continue.  I believe there is a level of despair in Grandparenthood that is often overlooked or given little consideration.  There is a certain level of Fear in Grandparenting.  We all experience, to one degree or another, the Fear of Rejection.  After all, the old Fogey is out of touch with modern times, right?  There is the Fear of Aging and the loss of productivity, self-worth, and physical ability.  There is the Fear of Failure.  That would be the fear of not properly influencing the children and grandchildren that they become good parents, grandparents, and citizens.

Then, there is the Despair of Frustration.  The lack of willingness of others to hear our counsel is frustrating. We see the pitfalls and dangers and when our warnings and offerings of guidance are not heeded it is frustrating.  There is another element of frustration in seeing our children and grandchildren fail to heed our counsel and repeat our mistakes.

I do not and will not adopt the attitude, “Well they are grown now, so what can I do?”  I cannot control their lives and do not want to.  I cannot make their decisions and do not want to.  However, I can pray and give them an example that, hopefully, will draw them into the light and the right paths.

The emotional strain is beyond belief when one deeply cares about the lives of those they are seeking to influence.  When you have done all, you can and given it your best shot and they still reject your counsel and rebel against God, it is heartbreaking.  It results in a state of broken-heartedness and many times we cry, “LORD, what can I do?”  Let me offer hope, there is an answer to that question.

There is an Obligation Imposed, by God on Grandparents.  We are to give those following an example worthy of being followed.  Let me ask, “What is the image you are projecting?”  Most of us desire to give our children and grandchildren a heritage of character rooted and grounded in a good name.  It is more than being well-spoken of.  It is more than a good reputation.  It is a life that bears spiritual fruit and exhibits Christlikeness.  It is not only a name remembered on earth but written in heaven.

That demands the question, “How Can I Project That Image?”  First, make a total commitment of your life to Jesus.  Second, endeavor to live totally committed daily and be conscious of your example.  I have discovered that sheep are led much easier than they are driven.  There is a poem that I share to remind us of a powerful truth:

“We are a living gospel, a chapter each day, by deed that we do, by word that we say; men read what we live, whether faithless or true, Say!  What is the gospel according to you?”

I heard about a Hindu woman who was converted and incredibly persecuted by her husband because of her faith.  The missionary asked how she responded.  She said, “I cook his food better when he complains. I keep the house cleaner when he is mean.  When he gives harsh words, I speak softly and kindly.”  She said, “I try to demonstrate that I am a better woman because I am a Christian.”  He could not resist and was converted too.  I had a person tell me that she got saved because of her grandmother.  She said, “I could not argue with her life.”

What can we do?  My own grandparents greatly influenced my life and did so with a godly heritage.  They wanted me to be better and do better.  They clearly had a desire to give us a godly heritage and a followable example.  That is the cry of my heart, “LORD, help me to be a right influence on my grandchildren.  Help me demonstrate to them a dedicated and committed life.”  I declare that “With God’s help I will do my best to be the example that will give them a godly influence.”

God bless you as you continue your journey in Christ!
