Matthew 18:18-20 – “Assuredly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. 19 “Again I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven. 20 For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.” NKJV
I am aware that the full context of this passage is dealing with offenses and church discipline but it has an application beyond that regarding our victory through the prayer of agreement. In Ephesians 4:13 the apostle Paul identified that the ministry of those giving oversight was so that the Body of Christ could all come into UNITY of the faith. In 1 Corinthians 1:10 he addressed the Corinthian church directing them to all SPEAK the same thing which is another dimension of UNITY of the faith. If we are going to have POWER in the spirit realm and supercharge our prayers as a Body we must find a pathway to UNITY of the faith.
Through the years I have heard much preaching and teaching regarding THE PRAYER OF AGREEMENT and some of it I embrace and some I question. Understanding that what I am about to present will either be embrace, questioned or rejected, I proceed with some apprehension but a desire to enhance your faith and weaponry.
CONSIDER THE TEXT:
- If How Many? TWO
- What Do They Do? AGREE
- About What? ANYTHING
- What Are The Results? POSITIVE ANSWERS
In this passage Jesus emphasizes and reemphasizes something in particular. In order to establish a doctrine or principle of faith we need to allow two or three witnesses to speak to the matter.
In 2 Corinthians 13:1 Paul tells us that “out of the mouth of two or three witnesses, let every word be established.” I believe that 1 Corinthians 1:10 is a connector for Matthew 18:19 that we SPEAK the same thing and are joined in mind and judgment regarding the matter. Psalm 133 tells us that it is good and pleasant for brethren to dwell together in unity and there the blessings flow.
UNITY is not everyone saying: “We are going to get into Unity.” It is not a feeling. It is when everyone speaking the same thing with the same mind, heart and vision. You may immediately declare that an IMPOSSIBILITY but I challenge that presumption. When considering the Principle of Unity we must remember 2 Chronicles 16:9 that the Eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth as He seeks opportunity to demonstrate His power to man. Tragically we miss much of what God has because of our pet doctrines, precepts, plans and proposed purposes rather than finding Him and His Purposes.
Whenever you find a PRINCIPLE you need to find a biblical ILLUSTRATION to confirm it that causes it to be understandable, practical and applicable. With regard to the PRAYER OF AGREEMENT consider Judges 6 and Gideon. He was a poor man but chosen by God to bring deliverance to his nation. Israel was the tail not the head contrary to God’s declared promise. Sometimes we are guilty of ‘declaring’ or ‘coming into agreement’ with wrong things because of a lack of knowledge of God’s provisions, promises and principles.
Gideon was in complete shock that God would choose him. I believe that in the near future people are going to rise out of obscurity, stand in full agreement and do great exploits for the Kingdom of God. Psalms 75:6 tells us that “promotion does not come from the East, West or South but from God.” Gideon had a difficult time accepting his call but when he began to move toward that commission we see incredible results [Judges 7:15-17]. Paul said 1 Corinthians 11:1 – “follow me as I follow Christ…” We all follow someone or something. In Judges 7:17-22 we see an incredible victory against impossible odds and it is rooted in the Principle of Unity.
I am going to leave you there and return tomorrow to delve further into this thought. May the Lord bless you and be with you as you go through this day!
